The Illinois Association of Museums granted the 2021 Award of Excellence to the New Exhibit Building
The New Exhibit Building made its debut on May 1, 2021. It is home of multiple exhibitions. The military display includes a 1947 Aeronca L-16 “Grasshopper” airplane, a 1952 Ford military Jeep, a 1967 MUTT (Military Utility Tactical Truck), and service uniforms, medals and additional military memorabilia. Caterpillar vintage heavy equipment join the beautifully-restored 1931 Ahrens Fox fire truck in the Great Hall. The Upper Gallery includes textile, Peoria history and the brand new “Bricks in motion” LEGO® display.
A multimedia room offers an appealing gathering space and hosts special exhibitions. Starting in May 2022 this room is hosting a temporary exhibit on Camp Ellis, a very large WWII training center and POW camp in Ipava, IL, that housed up to 5,000 German prisoners at one time.
The wrap around veranda provides shaded space for rest and picnic tables.
